Deltran Battery Tender
The Deltran Battery Tender differs from a trickle charger in that it automatically switches from a full charge to a float charging mode and then monitors the battery. When the battery is accepting only .05 amps, the Battery Tender switches into a float charge mode. At this point both the current and the voltage of the Battery Tender decrease. The current drops to 10ma (virtually no current) and the voltage to 13.2. The gassing point of a battery is 13.8 volts, therefore applying any voltage greater than 13.8 will damage the battery.
Trickle chargers decrease current but increase voltage to upwards of 15.5 volts and continue the excessive gassing that is most detrimental to the life of batteries. Other automatic battery chargers do not operate in a "float" mode but shut off completely until the battery is 90% discharged. You can leave the battery tender connected for extended periods without worrying about boiling or overcharging the battery. It is recommended that the fluid level be checked on a monthly basis.
